SBCHA 2008 Accomplishments: * March 9 - 30th Anniversary Celebration was held at the Fly Cultural Arts Center in Shelbyville and recognized charter members and volunteers with over 15 years of service * Feb. - KIND News presentations teaching pet care was held in several third grades in Bedford County * April - Work was done on the hallway into the entrance of the shelter by a really nice man doing community service * April - A new sink and new cabinets at the sink were installed by a volunteer that make it easier to wash the cat litter pans. * April 9 - Marlene Walsh, Executive Director of PetSmart Charities Rescue Waggin' made her first site visit to the animal shelter * May 5 - SBHCA spring newsletters went out in the mail * May 10 - A Be Kind to Animals event was held at Kroger in Shelbyville and raised $260 for the animals * May - Shelbyville City Council members were approached about passing a no sale/give away of domestic animals ordinance and it passed the first reading this month * May 17 - the annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction fundraiser was held at the Blue Ribbon Circle in Shelbyville and netted about $7000 * June 3 - the first Rescue Waggin' transport went out at 5:30 a.m. to the Berman Center Westland, Michigan Humane Association taking 9 dogs from the Humane and 9 from the County Animal Control to this facility to be adopted * June - set up at Kroger parking lot in celebration of Adopt A Cat month and handed out information, also had kitten there for viewing * July 10 - No sale/give away ordinance passed its third reading at the City Council making it illegal in the city limits to sell or give away animals in public places such as parking lots * July 26 - volunteers worked in the Coca-Cola drink wagon selling burgers, hot dogs, drinks and chips in conjunction with Kroger's Sidewalk Spectacular and made $480 for the animals * Aug 5 - the second Rescue Waggin' transport went out at 5:30 a.m. to Westland Michigan Humane Association * Aug 30 - the first SBCHA yard sale was held and made $2800 for the animals * Aug 30 - Kroger had a cook-out event and volunteers made $200 selling hamburgers * Sept. 16 - the third Rescue Waggin' transport went out to Capital Area Humane in Lansing, Mich. There was a total of 39 dogs and pups from both agencies that went on this trip * Sept. 15 - newsletters for SBCHA went out in the mail. This was the first time an extra page of photos was added. * Sept. - KIND News began being distributed to third graders for this school year * Sept. 27 - the 4th Annual Celebration Pet Day was held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bedford County Ag Center, netting $1500 * Oct. 4 - an information table was set up at the first "Hawgs for Dawgs" Motorcycle Poker Run and shelter animals wandered the rally hoping to catch a potential adopters attention *Oct. 7 - Humane Pres. Diane Forbes gave a presentation to the Leadership Bedford Class of 2008-09 informing them how they can help SBCHA * Oct. 21 - the fourth Rescue Waggin' transport with 40 total animals left Bedford County for Westland, Michigan * Oct. 21 - PetSmart Charities Mentoring Program vist was held with Marlene and Michelle * Oct. 22 - a group from Jostens representing United Way visited the shelter * Nov. 18 - the fifth Rescue Waggin' transport was a success * Dec. 7 - the 2nd Holiday Tour of Homes was held with 8 gorgeous homes of the area and netted $2000 for the animals * Dec. 20 - Southside Baptist Church youth members donated items to the shelter |
