ABOUT ADOPTION

We are dedicated to placing puppies, kittens, dogs and cats in loving, responsible homes. It is our goal to place animals in homes where they will live for the rest of their lives as valued members of the family. To that end, all potential adopters are required to fill out an adoption application and are carefully and extensively interviewed so that they may be matched with a pet which will fit both their expectations and lifestyle.

Why Adopt a Pet?
When you adopt a pet from any reputable animal welfare organization, you are saving a life. You are not encouraging the indiscriminate breeding of dogs and cats for which there are simply not enough homes by buying an animal.

Animal welfare organizations provide the largest selection of dogs and cats anywhere. If you're looking for a purebred animal, you should be aware that these, too, are available in large numbers at animal shelters as well as through purebred animal rescue organizations.

If you buy a pet through a retail pet store, you are encouraging the proliferation of puppy and kitten mills. Puppy and kitten mills are little more than animal factories intent on making a profit with little regard for providing animals with humane and sanitary conditions. Many of these animals are inbred and often have serious health and/or temperament problems.

If you decide to purchase a purebred pet, please be aware that reputable breeders, those who are dedicated to maintaining and improving breed standards, never sell their animals through retail pet stores and they rarely place animals for sale through classified ads.

All animals have had a check-up by a licensed veterinarian are up-to-date on shots and those of appropriate age have been spayed or neutered. We do not have a set adoption fee. We ask for a voluntary donation to help us cover veterinary expenses.

An adoption application may be submitted online or downloaded and sent in to the organization. Upon submission of the adoption application (either by mail at SBCHA, P.O. However, please give some thought to the following areas before adopting any pet:

* The amount of time you can give an animal

* The size and type of home you can give an animal (for instance, do you plan to keep the animal inside or in a fenced area...do you live in town or on a farm)

* The number of people and other animals in your household

* Your experience with animals

Please take the time to completely fill out the adoption application. The more we know about the kind of home you can provide, the better pet/people match we can provide.
